Quatrième de couverture

Manufacturing or assembling objects implies a contact with tools and other parts. The friction stress at such interfaces, at the manufacturing stage, may have a profound influence on the surface quality and service properties of the manufactured parts and systems.
In some cases, it controls the material flow and the shape of the formed part. In other processes such as strip rolling, friction is the driving force, without which the process just does not work. Tribology aims at controlling friction and wear through a number of techniques: lubricants and lubrication systems, coatings and surface treatments, optimal design of processes... The contributions included in these two volumes present the state-of-the-art of the understanding of friction and wear, together with technological means to overcome or control them.
